“Rascal Flatts’ third album (not including that DVD thing they had), FEELS LIKE TODAY, continues the rootsy sound started on their last album, MELT. It’s present just enough to let you know these guys are not boy-banders–they are the real deal. And of course there’s enough pop to endear them to country music’s growing teenage girl fanbase.

The serious tone taken on many of these songs may be a bit surprising (unless you remember “I’m Moving On” and “My Worst Fear”), such as the intoxicating openers, “Where You Are” and “Bless the Broken Road.” The title track and “When the Sand Runs Out” preach of living your life in the moment (the latter song does this eloquently; the title track, not so much). Superb songwriting and musicianship (Gary Levox, vocals; Joe Don Rooney, electric guitar; Jay DeMarcus, bass) help craft this into an award-worthy album.

Each “Rascal” (yeah, that sounds horrible) contributed a song to the album, and they got together to write the blissful “Oklahoma-Texas Line.” Three guys, one sound, Rascal Flatts have established themselves as talented hitmakers, overcoming the boy-band image garnered upon them when they broke through. “I have to be honest here–it’s been a long wait for me. More than two years for some new Rascal Flatts material. But the wait is over, and it was well worth it!

“Melt” opens with the top-ten smash which you’ve no-doubt heard, “These Days.” The following tracks are of equally superb quality–from the emotionally powerful “My Worst Fear” to the harmony-ridden “Mayberry”. Of course you’ve got some of those up-beat, perky songs: “Too Good Is True,” “Love You Out Loud,” “Fallin’ Upside Down,” and “You.” You also have a few ballads: “I Melt”, “Like I Am”, and “My Worst Fear.” But then we’ve got a couple of surprises: The two almost-bluegrass songs, “Dry County Girl” and “Shine On.”

You might also be shocked by the presence of a mandolin on pretty much all of the tracks. Their harmonies are as excellent as ever, and Gary Levox’s voice hits the high notes perfectly.

Rascal Flatts had been labeled a boy-band; take one listen to these guys, though, and you will know that that is not true. Just because an artist records one pop song (“See Me Through” on their first album) doesn’t mean they’re a pop artist. Faith Hill’s still considered country, but isn’t her latest supposed to be almost all blues?

If you’re a pop fan, and are looking for another boy-band, then get lost. You will not find it here. They may not look the part, but these guys are country, through and through. “Melt” is one of the best albums to come out in 2002; it’s also the best these guys’ve done so far. “If you’re a fan of Rascal Flatts, you will totally love this album! Top to bottom, the songs are all very strong. They all have amazing harmony, and cross many different musical genres. “Love Who You Love” starts off the CD with an awesome, classic Rascal Flatts song – which should soon be a sure-fire #1 hit. A Very catchy and upbeat tune, which features well written lyrics with a nice message. Their first single (“Here Comes Goodbye”) is already #1 on the country charts, which it definitely deserves. It’s a great power-ballad which features the amazing combination of Jay’s piano playing, Gary’s vocals, Jo Don’s Guitar, and Dann Huff’s production.

The title track is a very good song which is definitely hit material, as is “Once” (another potential single written by Jeffrey Steele). “Things That Matter” carries a message that so many of us need to hear, and it wastes no time getting the wise words across. “Summer Nights” is a perfect summer concert song, and a much more tasteful alternative to “Bob That Head” from their last album.

Overall, I think that the final track – “Why” – is the very best song on the album. It is an unbelievably powerful and emotional ballad, which deals with a sensitive topic in such a unique way. The lyrics will give you chills when you realize what they are really about. To me, this one has “Song of the Year” written all over it. A great ending to a really great album.” ~ By Joey Sciarra
