| “Whatever Mariah did to prepare for this cd was ingenious. The choices are catchy – club conscious and youthfully contemporary (check out “To the Floor” with Nelly to hear what I mean) but not so urban it disenfranchises her very earliest fans. My favorite track is “It’s Like That” but the choices are incredible so it doesn’t feel as if a single track is just filler material. I love how much vocal flare she uses to her fullest possible potential on this cd. She never wavers or cracks and it’s wonderful to hear her in top form again. “Mine Again” is for her fans from the beginning as is “Circles,” a genuine love song that proves she-has-no-rival-as-a-pop-diva. I absolutely love her gospel sound in “Fly Like a Bird.” She has some of the most contemporary brilliance behind her like Twista, and Jermaine Dupri but she managed to hold onto what makes her who she is. | “Mariah Carey has finally gotten back to what made her one of the most adored female artists of the past decade. Singing gorgous powerful ballads that showcase her miraculous voice. Also thrown in a bunch of fun uptempo funky tracks that show Mariah can be just as playful. Most noteably are the 2 remakes Last Night a DJ Saved My Life and Didn’t Mean To Turn You On. The production is wonderful and Mariah sounds as if she’s having a ball. But of course the standout tracks are the ballads. Lead The Way, Reflections(Care Enough), and Never Too Far are right up there with some of my Mariahs best ballads, and vocally she has never sounded better. Starting off very soft and building to a powerful climax with Mariah belting out one of her signature high notes, each song will leave you in awe of this incredible talent. The reason for the 4 stars is that the album focuses too much on her “guest artist”. As I much as I respect artists such as Mystikal, Ja Rule, and Da Brat, I would much rather have only Mariah on these songs. The other artists are only a distractment to the album. | “In between her debut and Music Box, I kind of lost track of and faith with Mariah Carey. I was also getting into the grunge and alternative scene, but the first single I heard, the title track, made me think, “OK, what’s going on here? No ballad for the first single?” I’ve finally been sitting down and listening to it and see I’ve misjudged this album. The catchy danceability outdoes that of “Someday” and she lets out more than her share of piercing high notes I’ve associated with her. That and three other songs were done by the plant managers of the C&C Music Factory, Robert Clivilles and David Coles. OK, anytime you see anything written by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff, think to yourself, “wonderful ballad with keyboards”, because that’s what “And You Don’t Remember” is one of the sad heartbreak ones, which leaves her “stranded here/in nothingness/with only tears/and loneliness.” “Can’t Let Go” is another one of those ballads, her voice is emotionally stronger in this one, awash with the piano-synths, drum programming, and her backing vocals. The upbeat funky R&B of “Make It Happen” is another C&C production, and one of Mariah’s religious songs on not giving up in the struggle with life. Seeing Carole King’s name after Mariah in the songwriting for “If It’s Over” was surprising. This gospelly ballad includes a trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, and bari-sax, so it goes all out with instruments. She asks for outright honesty and communication instead of uncomfortable avoidance. “If it’s over, let me go” she sings, and demonstrates her strong vocal power here. She tries to do her best approx. of an Aretha wail in the beginning of the C&C-produced “You’re So Cold.” The dilemma of staying with a cold and cruel-hearted man is the theme here. While she bewails the way he treats her, the tragedy is she’s still in love with the rotter. “So Blessed” is another Afanasieff slow-dancing tender-hearted ballad. The lullaby-like melody of this song evolved into “Forever” from Daydream. “Stay with me beyond the end/I treasure you/you made me whole again” she sings thankfully. “To Be Around You” is another uplifting funky C&C song, tinged with heavy synths and backing vocalists in the chorus; this song is a celebratory one. The last Afanasieff ballad is “Till The End Of Time”, and three guess to what words precede the title in the chorus. A sweet ballad with Mariah’s voice at its gospellish best. The stark bluesy piano torch ballad “The Wind” is an ode to a loved one who died young, and Mariah goes into quivering and near-weepy mode. “And to the wind go so many dreams…how could you let life pass you by” she asks forlornly. I can easily see a blue light cast over her as she stands in front of the piano. This and the previous song were recorded in part at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, but apparently, no Ewoks were featured as backing vocalists. Mariah enlisted the plant managers of C&C Music Factory, Robert Clivilles and David Coles, for producing and writing four songs, including the title song. Now that I have to listen to this album, I realize that it’s actually quite refreshing–with the right number of ballads and upbeat dance tunes, even balanced in the middle. | “2001 was not Mariah’s year. It started in an upbeat mood when she signed an $100 million dollar contract with Virgin Records. Her first movie, GLITTER, tanked at the box office. The soundtrack failed to present any huge hits or the sales that the label desired. She was payed out of her contract and let go. In between it all, Mariah suffered from personal problems, breakdowns, and more. On CHARMBRACELET, Mariah lets us into her world, and offers up what might be her most personal offering yet. The album opens with the first single “Through The Rain”, a fitting choice knowing what she has been through. It is an inspiring song of hope and determination, realizing you have the strength to make it through the rain and face another day. It’s a classic Mariah ballad, in a similar vein of her past hits “Hero” and “Can’t Take That Away”. I was not sure what to expect with this album, but I am not too disapointed in it. Once again she has the collaborations, however thankfully there are not as many on here as on her past albums like GLITTER or RAINBOW. Cam’ron joins Mariah on the bouncy “Boy (I Need You)”, Jay-Z and Freeway join her on “You Got Me”, West Side Connection on “Irresistible”, and Kelly Price & Joe on the “Through The Rain” Remix. The strength of the album lies in the ballads, which are very personal. “I Only Wanted” is one of my favorites, it looks in retrospect at a relationship and the promises made, wishing the outcome was different. A sentiment and experience I’m sure many people have been through in their own lives, I know I have. “My Saving Grace” is a nice uplifting ballad, with excellent vocals from Mariah. She does another cover song here as well, on “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak”, originally done by Def Leppard. “Clown” is rumored to be about her brief relationship with Eminem, its definately a tongue in cheek song full of attitude. Perhaps the saddest, most personal moment on the album lies in the song “Sunflowers for Alfred Roy”, a song she sings about her father who passed away earlier this year. According to Mariah, she only sang this song once through. “Lullaby” and “Subtle Invitation” are upbeat funky numbers fans are sure to love. My only complaints are, the collaborations, once again not necessary, and the high level she is singing at. She is singing even higher than she did on RAINBOW, and at times it sounds strained and its hard to hear what she is trying to convey, but at times it does work. Overall, whether or not this album performs well commercially is not the question. Mariah has returned to form on this CD, by singing and writing from the heart. | “This album is Mariah’s bestseller, for good reason. It contains two of her biggest hits, the pop perfection of “Dreamlover” and the inspiring lyrics of “Hero”. It also includes her beautiful remake of “Without You” as well as the inspiring “Anytime You Need A Friend”. Then there are the beautiful album tracks, such as the title track and “Just To Hold You Once Again”. This album also contains Mariah’s last (as far as I know) collaborations with Clivilles and Cole. These tracks (“Now That I Know”, “I’ve Been Thinking About You”)have a House-type feel and prove Mariah’s versatility. This album is listenable from beginning to end, with no slow spots. If possible, one should try to order the version with “Everything Fades Away” as a bonus track. That track is worth it’s weight in gold. | “Respect. The most coveted word in all of show business, it is also the hardest position to achieve. On “Rainbow”, Mariah Carey’s 9th studio release, the singer may be earning just that. Cover art aside, “Rainbow” pushes to display Carey as a newly freed individual, both in musical content and artistic style. “Rainbow” has arguably found its footing in R & B and Pop more clearly than her past albums(note:”Butterfly”)have. She has finally hit a stable stride, capturing the attention of of both the Adult-Contemporary world as well as Hip Hop audiences alike. The intelligent pairing of Carey and Jay-Z on “HeartBreaker” gives the buouyant song an urban boost; on the flip side, her remake of Phil Collin’s mid-80′s power ballad hit “Against All Odds” will more than likely strengthen her already tight grip on the Pop world. Of course, the album has its moments, on tracks like “Bliss”(where her vocals sound strangely reminiscent of a broken whistle), or “X-Girlfriend”, a song which could easily be interchangeable with any cut offered by younger ingenues like Brandy. Still, it’s on gospel-infused tracks like “Thank God I Found You” with 98 Degrees and Joe on which Carey excels the most, and where the proverbial “pot-of-gold” at the end of this “Rainbow” can be found. And as for me and Mariah, we have our own “story”… I was in love with a cute and beautiful little girl when I was 12 years old (19 now).
