Digital Booklet – Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess: Live On Earth
“Jason and the entire band are simply incredible on Beautiful Mess! The CD is wonderful and the DVD is even better. I saw him when the Gratitude Cafe Tour came to Pittsburgh, PA – 2 days before the Chicago show was filmed for this CD/DVD. He is seriously one of the best live performers around and it’s fun to relive such a great concert! I love watching him perform “Fall Through Glass” with Bushwalla (on the DVD only). Sunshine Song literally brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard it! A classic, The Boy’s Gone, is fantastic!” ~ By Be Happy (2009)

“It’s really hard to find a good album from a young artist these days. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you can find a lot of popular crap. You never have to worry about that with Mraz.

Live at Java Joe’s is a real treasure. Mraz is a brilliant songwriter and you can really relate to him on this album. He’s not (yet) my favorite artist of all time, but he’s certainly the best live performer out there. No, his sets don’t sound like his studio recordings-they’re worlds better. On Java Joe’s, you get that flavor without audience interference. I don’t know how he got such a perfect recording, but he did.

Mraz’s talent shines through on old favorites like “You and I Both.” The live version is energized and free, unlike the studio recording. “Sleep All Day” with the “At Last” intro is absolutely brilliant. By far, my favorite track on this album is “0% Interest,” but that’s just because I have a personal bias toward that song. His guitar playing is brilliant as always, and his talent and love for vocal jazz music also graces this CD.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an old Mraz fan or if you only know him by his radio hits; you’ve got to own this album.”

“Jason Mraz is one of the few artists these days who can sing better live than recorded. He is the most highly underrated artist of our time. He has an enormous amount of talent and it really shines through in this album. The first track is AMAZING! He sings his entire E minor EP in F cd without pause and with flawless vocals. It’s 35 minutes of pure musical bliss. Also, he has included some amazing never released songs like God Rests In Reason and 10,000 Motherf***ers. They are both beautiful songs that have been fan favs for a long time. There are also some great live acoustic versions of songs from MR. A-Z. They are even better than originals, so check them out. I’m not sure why they included 2 DYGMM’s? But aside from that, this album is flawless. Definitely worth buying!” ~ By Conor25

“I was tentative at first to purchase this CD/DVD set because I am generally not into live recordings. But my decision to get it was so right. Granted, playing the CD alone and hearing the crowds’ screaming can be slightly annoying, but once I put the DVD in and watched the concert, I saw exactly why they were screaming. The lovely and engaging Jason is a totally amazing performer. He gives the audience his all and draws them into his world. The fact that he loves what he does is really obvious too. His ability to improvise and to experiment with different music styles is unbelievable. And his vocal range is out of this world. The song No Stopping Us displays this point perfectly.

The DVD shows the concert, some interesting little interviews in between each song, and there are also some funny extras that show that not only is Jason Mraz an incredibly talented guy, he is also funny and down to earth. The viewer gets an idea of what a day in the life of Jason is really like.

For anyone who already has and loves his studio CD Waiting For My Rocket To Come, I highly suggest you get this one too. There are a handful of songs on this recording that are not on his album. This live recording shows his true raw talent in a way that the restraints of a studio album recording never could. And to those of you considering delving into the world of Mraz for the first time, I do recommend this particular recording, but check out his studio album as well.

I can honestly say that this guy is my favorite performer and you just might feel the same way if you check out this CD.”

“From the first track to last Jason Mraz dazzles, perplexes and scintillates on his high-octane 3rd full-length studio album “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.” His witty, highly individual lyrical style and organic, powerful backing band transform these songs into four minute detours into the mind of the most underrated singer/songwriter of the 2000s.

Lead single “I’m Yours” finally lands on its feet after many years in Mraz’s setlists with its mellow, Hawaiian grooves, complete with visions of obligatory surfers and pineapple drinks in the background. It’s just a slice of what “We Sing…” has to offer, however. “Lucky” is a sparse, melodic duet with Colbie Callait that transitions aptly out of “I’m Yours,” while “Make It Mine” and “Live High” are classic Mraz with feel-good, enrapturing melodies designed to sweep listeners clean off their feet. “Make It Mine” is particularly upbeat, full of hand-claps and lush, horn-laden instrumentation. It should be a single, and if it becomes one it should give Mraz his first major hit since 2003′s “The Remedy” if radio programmers have even a neuron left in their heads.

The subject matter is diverse on “We Sing…” but Mraz never suffers from mood swings. “Love For a Child,” by far one of the most touching compositions of his career, touches on the effect of divorce on a young child (“When the house was left in shambles/Well, who was there to handle all the broken bits of glass?”) while “Only Human” promotes environmental awareness without playing the blame game. “Details In the Fabric” featuring James Morrison is a moody, meditative look at life, love and relationships, while “Coyotes” takes Mraz’s sonic pallete in new directions with layered vocals, percolating snyths and an awesome background chorus. His operatic vocals from “Mr. Curiosity” from his last LP make an appearance here.

Other tracks continue the unparalleled quality. “Butterfly” is an awesomely-produced ode to sexual chemistry (“You make my slacks a little tight/You may unfasten them if you like/That’s if you crash and spend the night”) with effervescent instrumentation and a mercurial, vigorous melody. “If It Kills Me” finds Mraz pining through cheeky, self-deprecating lyrics about the lady who’s got everything except the insight to see he’s her best match (“We get along much better than you and your boyfriend”) while “A Beautiful Mess” bookends the sentiments of “Details In the Fabric” with a more optimistic outlook.

The album’s arguable highlight, however, is the curiously-titled “The Dynamo of Volition.” Replete from wall-to-wall with Mraz’s entrancing singing/rapping style, the song is like “O. Lover” or “Forecast” from 2005′s “Mr. A-Z” is that it perfectly captures Mraz’s unrivaled melodic weightiness. The lyrics spew left and right in haphazard fashion, but whether or not they are all understood makes no difference. “…Volition” is an exemplary Mraz tune, with a melody powerful enough to hang over the listener, the kind of melody that paints a picture like a scene from an indie movie, that haunts in such a way that it is instantly classic and unforgettable. It says more than any words ever could.

Mraz has that rare kind of talent that puts him in the category of legendary musicians, those musicians with such blazing, inherent talent that it is simply cannot be learned or created. Elton John, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder come to mind as those types of dynamic musicians that were born with such astounding abilities, and Mraz has what it takes to join their ranks if only more listeners would wizen up and find out what some of us have been lucky to know for over five years.”

“With his second studio album, the humorously titled “Mr. A-Z,” Jason Mraz has delivered a fine collection of tunes that will solidify his popularity with his dedicated fanbase, yet manages to broaden his horizons in terms of song arrangements and subject matter.

The pensive “Life Is Wonderful” is the opening track, where Mraz makes a series of commonsense observations about life that nevertheless challenges listeners to think outside the box. Lead single “Wordplay,” however, immediately follows, injecting the disc with a shot of levity.

“It’s all about the wordplay/Ah la la la love/The wonderful thing it does because/Because I am the wizard of ooh’s and ah’s and fa la la’s/Yeah the Mr. A-Z/They say I’m all about the Wordplay.”

Despite his astute sense of humor, Mraz does not obscure the fact that he is most definitely a singer/songwriter in the classic 70′s sense. Fine examples are the “Plane”, an extremely intense selection where he proclaims from high above the ground that, should he come crashing down that he will “remember where the love was found,” while in “Bella Luna” he softly croons of the mysterious allure of the moon, creating a relaxing, romantic atmosphere with his witty observations.

“Please Don’t Tell Her,” which reflects the conflicting emotions of looking back on someone fondly despite the intense pain they brought your life, finds him repeating at the song’s end “I don’t” in response to the idea that he might still care about an ex-flame, although the listener is clearly meant to question his confidence in that declaration. Other tracks, such as the completely enrapturing fare of “Forecast” and “O. Lover,” which will grip listeners tightly with its frantic vocal performance, explore similar themes.

Mraz also explores the art of self-loathing in “Mr. Curiosity,” pokes fun at the communication barrier between men and women with the assistance of Rachel Yamagata in “Did You Get My Message,” and proudly owns who he is with no apologies in the radio-bound “Geek In the Pink,” affirming “you might regret what you let slip away like the geek in the pink.”

Furthermore, “Clockwatching” is an inspiring track about coming of age with the one you love at your side, as well as learning what it is to live in the present, rather than anticipation of what has yet to come, while the spine-tingling “Song For a Friend,” doubtless inspired by his father, closes the album with his most impassioned performance and an uplifting message.

“All the thing’s that I’ve read, what he wrote me/Is now sounding like the man I was hoping to be/I keep on keeping it real/Cause it keeps getting easier indeed/He’s the reason that I’m laughing/Even if there’s no one else/He said, `you’ve got to love yourself’.”

Although it is much different than his debut in many ways, “Mr. A-Z” does not at all suffer. Rather, the album indicates that Mraz has undergone major growth as both a songwriter and song stylist, and that his talent is far reaching and will continue to entertain and astound for the duration of what is sure to be a long, rewarding career.”

“I bought Jason Mraz’s album “Waiting For My Rocket to Come”, back in March and as the summer came about with radio rotation and album sales increasing I was glad to see his deserved commercial breakthrough. “The Remedy” entered the charts suddenly and by summer’s end reached the Top 20 of Billboard’s Hot 100 and “Rocket” started selling well, eventually peaking at #55 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. However, the LP went down in sales quickly thereafter and did not achieve the chart longevity it deserves. Despite the recent launch of a second single, “You and I Both,” and an accompanying video, the album’s success has stalled due to scant airplay, even though the new single is just as radio-friendly as “The Remedy”.

In fact, the album has quite a few potential hit singles to spare. “Sleep All Day”, with an addictive hook, is comprised of vivid, touching lyrics that reveal Mraz’s innermost sentiments toward his father. (No way he said take it/Take it and don’t break it/With your own two hands/That was my old man and he said if all/All is grounded you should go make a mountain out of it.)

Also good listens are the reggae-infused “I’ll Do Anything”, the hilarious “Too Much Food”, the autobiographical play-on-words “Curbside Prophet” and the impressive end-of-summer sentiment of “Who Needs Shelter?”. The intonation of Mraz’s vocals and the simple, laid-back arrangements of the track fuse, maximizing its impact on the listener with a wistful, bittersweet sensation, one-hundred percent in accord with the lyrics. (Who needs shelter from the sun?/Not me, no not anyone/I’d sleep it all away/But the sun won’t let me/I’d miss those lovely days of summer/Good-day sunlight/I’d like to say how truly bright you are/You don’t know me but I know you/You’re my favorite.)

That said, there are some downsides to “Rocket”. After witnessing Mraz and his free-spirited, uninhibited self in a live setting, it is easy to see how “Rocket”, a studio album with top-notch production from John Alagia, actually blunts his impromptu talents, at least in a manner of speaking. As it is, some of the songs toward the middle of the album sound too similarly produced, which could put off the more attentive listener. In the meantime, there’s an excellent live album available exclusively through Mraz’s Web site that captures more of his spirit as a live performer, as well as the hope that his future studio albums will have more diverse production.

As he closes the album with “Tonight, Not Again” his voice begins low and ethereal, but as the song progresses he lets it soar so high, so full of rapture, that it is almost bone-chilling; you don’t know what hit you. Perhaps therein lies Mraz’s most remarkable talent: An uncanny ability to move the listener while perfectly expressing the meaning of his lyrics; there’s no question about what he meant or how he felt when he composed this music. His lyrics, sometimes witty, sometimes deep, always intriguing, topped off with great vocal skill to boot, definitely make Jason Mraz an artist to watch.”
